Student Retreat
Advocacy and Leadership
Retreat for college students
With a focus on Poverty and Homelessness Issues
Historically, student movements have been the powerful initiators of systems change. The Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless sees great potential for student’s role in the movement to end poverty and homelessness. We are hosting an Advocacy and Leadership Retreat October17-18th that provides students the unique opportunity to learn movement-building skills in a practical way by focusing on student organizations and activism. Students will learn:
- How to organize successful events (e.g. a candidate forum)
- Print media skills
- How to facilitate productive meetings and discussions
- Creative lobbying strategies
- How to make current student organizations more effective
- Current homelessness and poverty policy
- How to discover and use the passions of others in your organization
The workshops lead by Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless’ staff and interns are interactive: students are encouraged to share the knowledge base they have and to explore ideas along with presenters. Attendees will meet other students from private, state, and community colleges who are also concerned about poverty and homelessness issues. We are confident the relationships formed at this retreat and knowledge gained will add momentum to the movements to end poverty and homelessness and help students make an impact with their student organizations and future vocations.
