Coalition Plays Part in Efforts to Pass National Housing Trust Fund
Last week efforts to secure passage of a National Affordable Housing Trust Fund took a major step forward in the U.S. Senate. Attempts to derail the legislation by attaching deleterious amendments to the legislation failed. The Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless thanks Senators Coleman and Klobuchar of Minnesota for voting against the amendments. The Coalition also thanks the hundreds of individuals who took time to call our Senators. Because of you, our Senators heard loud and clear that Minnesotans support passage of the Trust Fund.
The Coalition also wants to thank the Corporation for Supportive Housing for letting us have the microphone to inform conference attendees about the importance of generating calls to Senator Coleman’s office as well as for allowing us to wear our crazy Uncle Sam hats and to hand out action alerts to their conference’s attendees.
When passed, the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund will establish a National Housing Trust Fund, a dedicated source of funding for the production, preservation and rehabilitation of 1.5 million affordable homes in 10 years. At least 75% of the funds will be for housing for households that are extremely low income, earning less than 30% of an area’s median income.
