Minnesotans eager for a say on state spending decisions will soon have a forum, thanks to leaders of three legislative budget committees. Sen. Richard Cohen and Rep. Lyndon Carlson, chairmen of the Senate and House Finance Committees, have joined with Rep. Loren Solberg, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, to schedule town meetings in a flurry of Minnesota cities later this month. The committees are the chief venues for determining how budget cuts will be enacted and whether Minnesota’s revenue shortfall will be addressed soley by cuts or by a combination of trims and taxes. More than half of Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s proposed cuts are aimed at health and human services, and thus would fall disproportionately on citizens most in need.
